How can Open Science project results achieve long-term visibility and integration within EOSC? For the environmental community, the answer lies in the ENVRI Hub.
During the OSCARS and EOSC-A webinar on 17 February - “EOSC Federation and the Science Cluster EOSC Nodes & Hubs: Onboarding of Services” - ENVRI representative, Andreas Petzold presented the role of the ENVRI community in supporting service integration within the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).
ENVRI brings together 27 environmental research infrastructures, united by a long-standing commitment to Open Science and open environmental data. For more than 14 years, the community has collaborated to build interoperable services, shared standards, and FAIR data practices across atmospheric, marine, ecosystem, and solid Earth domains.
The ENVRI Hub as an EOSC Node for Environmental Sciences
By aligning environmental research infrastructures under a shared node in the EOSC Federation, the ENVRI community strengthens cross-domain collaboration and accelerates the uptake of FAIR, open, and interoperable environmental science services across Europe.
As highlighted in Andreas’ presentation, at the center of this effort is the ENVRI Hub - the gateway for environmental research services within the EOSC Federation. He stated:
“The ENVRI Hub provides a sustainable environment to make your services accessible to scientists and to expose them within the European Open Science Cloud.”
The Hub is a sustainable exposure layer where results from Open Science projects, including OSCARS-funded initiatives, can be onboarded, made discoverable to the wider European research community, and connected to the EOSC ecosystem.
The ENVRI Hub provides:
A Service Catalogue
A structured entry point for publishing, describing, and making services discoverable globally within EOSC.A Knowledge Base and analytical frameworks
Supporting interoperability, standards alignment, and cross-domain reuse.A Training Portal (developed under ENVRI-FAIR)
Offering onboarding guidance and capacity-building resources for providers and users.A developing Data Catalogue
Supporting FAIR environmental datasets and enhancing discoverability.Virtual Research Environments (VREs)
Enabling embedding of notebooks, workflows, and computational tools so outputs are both visible and usable. An Environmental AI Expert
An AI-powered assistant integrating large language models to help researchers identify relevant services and solutions. Open Science project outputs can be incorporated, increasing visibility and practical uptake.
The Hub ensures services are not only visible but also usable. By embedding notebooks, workflows, and tools into interoperable environments, project outputs can reach researchers across domains.
Supporting Sustainable Onboarding
The ENVRI Hub provides a sustainable framework for onboarding services. While service maintenance remains the responsibility of developers, the Hub ensures services are FAIR, integrated into EOSC, and visible to a broad environmental and interdisciplinary research community.
For OSCARS and other Open Science projects, the ENVRI Hub offers a clear pathway from results to long-term visibility and integration.
If your project develops services for environmental research, get in touch with the ENVRI Hub team to identify a clear route from results to long-term impact.
