RSOTC - The Regional State of the Climate dashboard
To learn more about bringing true transparency and regional detail to climate reporting, we sat down with Antonio Perez at the 2nd OSCARS Annual General Meeting (AGM) to discuss the impactful work driving the RSOTC project.
While "State of the Climate" reports are essential for public awareness and policy, they often lack regional detail—and rarely follow FAIR principles. Data may be open, but the code and algorithms used to process it typically are not, making results difficult to reproduce or build upon.
It is exactly this Open Science gap—in software, tools, and reproducibility—that the OSCARS-funded RSOTC project is working to close. By building a FAIR-by-design web dashboard, the project provides near real-time access to regional climate data, including rainfall and temperature trends, across European NUTS divisions. Crucially, all workflows, code, and data are openly published on GitHub and Zenodo.
The project is already delivering concrete results: a scalable system for automatic climate data download, standardised data processing pipelines ensuring consistency and quality, cloud-ready datasets optimised for interactive platforms, and a regional aggregation tool that translates gridded climate data into tailored, region-specific time series.
